So you say your BOWL is half full… I say– of what?

It’s one thing to be an optimist and see that bowl half full – but whether it is full or empty, I think the focus needs to be on what is in there to begin with.

The law of attraction states that you attract the same type of energy that you put out in the world. That is all fine and dandy when you are feeling good and everything is going your way, but what about those days that seem full of things you don’t want to do, and you’re tired, and it is raining and cold and you’re grumpy and you feel like staying that way? Well, you actually don’t want to stay grumpy, but it seems way too much energy to shift from grumpy to one of the happier seven dwarfs like… say, Happy!

Act as if.  Oh, really?  I’m feeling totally grumpy and you want me to act as if… I’m happy? Happy may be a stretch, start with something just up from grumpy, say disagreeable or possibly snappy.  Snappy is good because it gives you the opportunity to smirk at yourself. You can say I’m feeling snappy and then you can start walking around the room snapping to a song you sing in your head, or you can start snapping at inanimate objects like your coffee maker. Make me a cappuccino snap, and I’m not telling you my name! Snap for your shoes and your coat and then take one moment to take it all in and realize that all this grumpiness simply- isn’t all that – SNAP!

Take your diva moment and head out with an open attitude. Smile at someone – anyone – just shift that grumpiness and see what happens. You might just luck out and find that the subway pulls up just as you walk in, or there are those perfect chocolate doughnuts in the staff kitchen, or the creative idea you had percolating in your head becomes tangible…

The only constant in life is change so if you are open to change you are one step ahead. There are always going to be those kind of days, but if you can roll with it, the bowl becomes half full, and opportunities abound to fill that bowl with the most magical, delectable, surprising things.

  1. I don’t know. Seeing the world as half-full or half-empty may have its limitations in the real world despite what might be “in the bowl” (I liked the idea of that). But I admire anyone who can be optimistic without being Pollyanna about it. I think it was Shaw who said that both optimists and pessimists contribute to society. The optimist invents the airplane, the pessimist the parachute. Thanks for you thoughtful blog.
